A Chair for the Person Behind the Camera

If you miss someone when you look through old photographs, ask them to sit beside you today.

After Sunday lunch, Xiaoman and her grandfather decide to print a photograph to slip inside his new calendar. They want the one from last autumn when the three of them ate tangerines together. Her mother had worn an orange sweater that day and joked that she looked as though she had come with the fruit bowl.

Her grandfather pushes his glasses up his nose. There he is with Xiaoman and a tangerine peel that has come off almost in one piece. In the next picture, it is the two of them again. “Mum, where were you sitting?” Her mother points between the windowsill and the cupboard. “I had to stand there. Anywhere else, all you’d see in his glasses was the window.”

Just Outside the Frame

Xiaoman tries the spot herself. From here she can see her grandfather’s eyes. The pictures she has loved for years carry her mother’s eye for these things: who squints against the light, whose lips tighten at the words “Give us a smile.” All three remember the same afternoon. Only now, looking for a picture of three generations, does Xiaoman notice the missing chair.

“Why don’t you ever take one of yourself?” is on the tip of her tongue. Then she remembers who always hands Mum the phone and settles in beside Grandpa. “I’ll set it up this time. Would you like to sit with us?” Her mother touches her collar. She doesn’t want to change. “Wear that one,” says Grandpa, peeling a tangerine. “I know that sweater.”

Ten Seconds to Pull Up a Chair

Xiaoman brings in a wooden chair from the balcony, props the phone against a tea tin and sets the timer for ten seconds. The first picture is mostly her back as she moves the chair. Her mother laughs and nudges the tin to the right. In the second, Grandpa is handing his daughter half a tangerine. Nobody remembers to face the camera. They decide to keep it.

Her mother enjoys taking pictures. There is nothing to put right about that. If she wants to stay behind the camera, she can. What Xiaoman can change is the habit of deciding for her. She can take the phone, let Mum choose a favourite or put it away and finish their tea when Mum says, “Not today.” The chair is an invitation, not an obligation.

A Caption in Their Own Words

Xiaoman thinks of writing “One happy family.” Grandpa writes slowly, but asks for a pen. On the back of the test print he puts, “This year’s tangerines are sourer than last year’s. She insists they’re sweet.” Her mother adds, “I like them.” Xiaoman supplies the date. In years to come, those words might even bring back the way Grandpa wrinkled his nose.

If you have an old picture you can’t bear to delete, look at it with the person who took it. Along with “What year was this?” try “Where were you standing?” or “What else do you remember?” With permission, save a line on the back or in the digital caption. If they want it kept within the family, a print in the post will do.

In the end Grandpa orders two prints: one for his calendar, one for Xiaoman to give her mother. As they clear the table, the wooden chair is still wedged between the old ones. Should it go back outside? Her mother sets tomorrow’s cup in front of it. “Leave it here for now.” The chair they pulled up for a photo has become a place for breakfast.
