Make Good Habits Easier: Give Your Effort a Supportive Place to Grow

A weed growing among hemp stands upright without needing support.

Sometimes we mean to read a few pages but must first search for the book. We plan to practise English, then open our phone and get drawn into messages. We intend to finish a task, yet face a series of small obstacles before beginning. When the day ends without the action we wanted, we may ask whether we lack discipline. Before judging ourselves, we can also examine whether our surroundings have made room for that action.

In “Encouraging Learning,” Xunzi uses this image to discuss the influence of one's surroundings. The classical analogy invites a reflection on modern life: personal choice and effort still matter, and we can also arrange an environment that supports them. It need not be expensive or attractive enough to photograph. It simply needs to make one worthwhile action easier to begin and more convenient to continue.

Remove a few obstacles before the first step.

If reading always requires finding the book, locating a pen, and choosing a place to sit, even ten minutes can involve considerable preparation. Clear one small part of a table for the book you are currently reading and a pen. Mark where you stopped. Next time, you can continue from that point instead of deciding again how to begin.

You can make a similar arrangement for English practice. Choose a short passage in advance, identify the three expressions you want to practise, and keep the recording or notes easy to find. Preparation should not complicate life. It should leave a clear, manageable next step in front of you when you are ready to act.

Move distractions away and useful things closer.

Careful work does not require complete silence, and not everyone has a private study. Begin with what you can change. During an agreed reading period, silence unrelated notifications, keep the reference material together, and handle non-urgent messages afterwards. A specific arrangement is often easier to follow than the vague instruction to concentrate harder.

If important communication must remain available, leave a channel for it without treating every alert as equally urgent. You can also tell someone you live with, “I would like fifteen minutes to finish this section, and then we can talk.” This is a considerate explanation of how you intend to use a short period of time, making cooperation easier.

Find someone who is willing to practise with you.

Our environment includes how we relate to people. Someone who listens and discusses an idea carefully can help us make it clearer. A friend learning a new skill can exchange small pieces of experience with us. Support need not involve daily supervision or comparisons about who is progressing faster. It can begin as companionship built on mutual respect.

For example, agree to share a reading note once a week, discussing one useful idea and one unanswered question. If the other person has not finished, first ask about their circumstances rather than judging or pressuring them. An agreement that makes returning feel welcome is better suited to lasting participation than one that makes mistakes frightening.

Let your surroundings serve your life.

Arranging a supportive space does not mean buying a new set of equipment. A book you already own, a usable table, and a realistic period of time may be enough to begin. If creating the ideal study corner keeps delaying the study itself, pause the decorating and try the conditions already available. Notice whether the action becomes easier to carry out.

A plan also needs to fit different kinds of days. When you are busy, keep a smaller version of the practice. During a move, a trip, or family responsibilities, reconsider the material and timing. A helpful environment is not an unchangeable set of rules. It helps us find a workable action within the conditions we actually have.

Improve one small part of your surroundings today.

To begin today, choose one small action you often postpone and identify the obstacle that most often appears before it. Change just one thing: bring out the book, prepare the relevant notes, reserve a clear time for practice, or make a suitable agreement with a friend. After a few days, check whether the adjustment actually helped.

Making room for growth is a practical way to support yourself. You need not wait for perfect conditions or struggle alone against every distraction. Giving your actions a little structure, so that worthwhile things can happen more easily, is already a thoughtful way to care for today and prepare something useful for tomorrow.
