THE READING ROOM
Leave a Question Mark Where You Get Stuck
A clear question gives you somewhere to begin when you open the book again.
Xiaohe has saved an hour of her morning off for the library. The ginkgo leaves outside have turned yellow. She borrows a book of English essays, planning to read two pages. The first paragraph stops her: she knows several of the words separately, but their meaning together slips away. She consults the dictionary twice and starts the same line again.
Someone at the next table turns a page quickly. She glances at the line she has not finished. “I can’t even understand something this simple” nearly overwhelms her interest in reading. Instead of closing the book, she copies the sentence into her own notebook and adds a question mark. The borrowed book stays unmarked, while her difficulty now has a place to sit.
Make the Question Smaller
“I’m bad at English” is too large a problem to suggest a next step. She asks something narrower: who is doing what, and which event comes first? She circles what she understands and leaves the uncertain connection open. The page is not blank. Knowing some of the words still counts, even when she cannot yet put the whole sentence together.
用一句我们自拟的例句来看这种卡顿:“Not until the rain stopped did she open the window.”
Consider an example written for this article: “Not until the rain stopped did she open the window.” She recognises the rain, the stopping and the window, yet is unsure whether the window was opened. The useful questions concern what “not until” says about time and why “did” comes before “she”. Writing those down brings her closer to an answer than blaming herself does.
Explain It Without the Notes
Examples of sentences beginning with “not until” in a grammar book make the meaning clearer: she opened the window only after the rain stopped. The rain stopped first; the opening followed. Placing the auxiliary “did” before the subject is inversion here, not a question addressed to the reader. Recording the two events in order helps her untangle the difficulty.
小禾遮住笔记,用自己的话说了一遍,再把例句改写成普通语序:“She did not open the window until the rain stopped.”
Following an explanation is not quite the same as recognising the pattern alone next time. She covers her notes, explains the meaning in her own words, then writes the sentence in ordinary word order: “She did not open the window until the rain stopped.” The meaning stays the same. If she hesitates, she can check that particular point without pretending to understand everything or dismissing everything she has learnt.
She does not collect a page of rules that morning. She keeps the original sentence, the order of events and her own explanation. Someone else might prefer arrows or a short voice note. The format matters less than whether tomorrow’s record answers “Where did I get stuck?” rather than merely proving that she looked something up. It gives the next attempt a place to continue.
Leave Room for Unfinished Understanding
Further down, another unfamiliar expression appears. With her remaining time in mind, she decides to finish the short passage using the context and look it up at home. A question mark need not be resolved immediately. If every line requires a stop, a shorter, annotated text may be more useful. Choosing something within reach helps make continued learning possible.
At home, she adds a slip to her bookmark: “Tomorrow, without the notes, recall when the window opened.” That is more concrete than promising to try harder. If a passage is troubling you, take away one small question with three parts: what is unclear, what could you consult, and how could you check your understanding? The whole book need not become an assignment.
The next day, two pages may still be too much. She may need time to recall the pattern or find another question waiting. But when she opens the book, she knows where to resume. Her hour by the window has produced no impressive page count. The question mark records something she wants to understand, and a reason to return.
