Making Room for a Hobby Without Scores

Original reflection: A picture that does not quite resemble its subject can still hold a stretch of time you truly enjoyed.

Remember what drew you to it

On Sunday morning, Aning placed a blue cup by the window and brought out her long-unused watercolors. She wanted to paint the pale light beside its rim. Her first stroke was too dark; the next had too much water and spread across the paper. She compared it with a saved painting tutorial on her phone. Suddenly, everything looked wrong, and her enthusiasm began to fade.

This was not the first time she had judged a hobby by how well she performed. Before learning a song, she wondered how soon she could sing it well. Before baking bread, she worried whether it would be presentable. Even before she began, one question could stop her: “Is it worth doing if I cannot do it well?” Yet she had bought those paints simply because she loved watching color spread through water. She had not been planning to enter a competition.

Wanting to improve was understandable. But when every attempt had to prove her ability, curiosity came with extra tension. Aning turned her phone face down and asked a smaller question: “What about this cup makes me want to keep looking?” It was the shadow inside the handle. The blue was not flat; near the table, it held a little purple.

Make a little room for the process

She set aside twenty minutes to try painting that shadow, without requiring a finished picture. Her old brush and existing paints would do; she did not need every tool from someone else’s video. She left the water stain alone and tried another patch beside it. A hobby session could be that simple: enough materials, a small activity, and no score due at the end.

The handle still looked crooked, but she mixed a gray-blue she liked. Once dry, the patch looked softer than it had when wet. Instead of throwing the whole sheet away, she wrote on the back, “I liked this blue today.” It recorded a real experience. It did not have to prove talent, explain a practical use, or predict an achievement.

If you hesitate before starting, choose something already within reach: sketch a leaf with the pen you have, hum a familiar tune, or try a combination of ingredients on hand. Choose a manageable amount of time and one thing to explore. Afterwards, ask what interested you and what you might try again. You can leave other people’s scores out of it for now.

Time without scores did not prevent serious learning. Aning kept the tutorial for when she wanted to understand the shape of the rim and practice one step. Practice could have a clear goal; a little experimentation did not always need one. She could choose according to her energy that day, without placing the same demand on every sheet or treating enjoyment and improvement as opponents.

Let enjoyment have a place

The picture did not go online. Aning clipped it to a small board beside her desk, where she could see it. If she later shared it, she could say, “I like this color and wanted to show you.” Sharing pleasure and requesting corrections were different needs. Explaining which she wanted could help someone respond, without turning every conversation into an assessment.

Making space for a personal hobby did not erase responsibilities to others. A commissioned or promised piece still needed care and an honest account of any limitations. This small freedom belonged to time she had not promised anyone. Within it, she could be a learner, an observer, or simply a person who enjoyed color, without having to claim more than that.

By the time she put her brush away, the sunlight had moved to the other side of the cup. Picking it up, she noticed marks she usually missed while drinking in a hurry. The morning had not instantly made her a skilled painter, but she wanted to sit by the window again. Having something enjoyable to return to gave an ordinary day something worth anticipating.
